The Fire of Prayer Must Never Go Out
The Fire of Prayer Must Never Go Out
"The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out." — Leviticus 6:12 (NIV)
Everyone who is born again has been made a priest unto God through Jesus Christ. As priests, we are called to offer sacrifices to God, and sacrifices cannot be offered without fire. In the same way, the sacrifice of prayer must rise from hearts that burn with passion for God.
Prayer that is merely spoken with the lips but lacks the intensity of the heart becomes a religious routine. God responds to prayer that rises from a fervent and engaged spirit. True prayer is not driven by emotion alone but by the leading and fervency produced by the Holy Spirit.
Just as God commanded that the fire on the altar must never go out, so the fire of His presence must continually burn on the altar of our hearts. The evidence that this fire is burning within us is a heart that longs deeply for God. When a person consistently meets with God in prayer, the presence of God ignites his heart with holy passion.
This burning is one of the first rewards given to those who diligently seek God. Through prayer, the Holy Spirit empowers us with the fire of His presence so that we may serve God effectively and be witnesses for Christ.
If our prayers are not fervent enough to involve our hearts, we are simply fulfilling a religious obligation. But when prayer burns within us, the presence of God becomes active in our lives.
Just as flies cannot settle on a hot surface, the devil and evil thoughts cannot easily settle in a heart where the fire of prayer is continually burning. When we truly encounter God, our hearts are set on fire, and that burning becomes the evidence of His presence within us.
From such a burning heart, God releases utterance and increases the anointing. Without continual and intense prayer, the fire of God's presence cannot remain alive in our spirits. And without that fire, there can be no divine utterance and no manifestation of God's glory.
Therefore, the altar of your heart must never grow cold. Let the fire of prayer continually burn within you so that God can work in you, for you and through you.
