Dwelling in the Secret Place
Dwelling in the Secret Place
"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." KJV+, Psalm 91:1
The secret place of God is His presence, where He reveals Himself to those who truly seek Him. God often hides Himself from those who are indifferent, but He gladly unveils Himself to those who pursue Him in prayer and in the fellowship of His people. It is in this place that His presence, power, and wisdom are experienced.
It is often those who are dissatisfied with what is happening in their lives, communities, or nations who pursue God into His secret place in prayer, seeking His intervention. Those who long for change and transformation are drawn to His presence to seek Him. But those who feel content with their present condition, or believe they can manage the crises around them by their own strength, often see no need to seek God.
There is a difference between casual seekers and covenant seekers of God.
Casual seekers approach God only when they have a need. They pray occasionally or attend church mainly on Sundays or during special occasions. Their interest is not in building a relationship with God but simply in receiving something from Him. Once their needs are met, they depart from His presence.
Covenant seekers, however, dwell in the secret place. They regularly spend time with God in personal prayer, listen to God to speak to them and faithfully gather with His people to worship and serve. Their desire is not only to receive from God but also to know Him, hear His voice, and offer themselves for His service.
Because of their devotion, the glory of God rests upon them. They are not in a hurry to leave His presence, either in private prayer or in the fellowship of the church. They remain to worship, to listen to God's word, and to serve others with the gifts God has given them.
God watches our attitude toward His presence and rewards each person according to their devotion. The measure of time and sincerity we give to the secret place is the measure that will be reflected in our lives publicly.
God does not entrust His mysteries and purposes to casual seekers, but to those who faithfully pursue Him and cultivate a relationship with Him.
Jesus Himself gave us this example. When His parents searched for Him after the Passover feast, they found Him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening and asking questions. When they asked why He had stayed behind, He replied, “Did you not know that I must be about my Father's business?”
Jesus showed that He was not a casual seeker, but one deeply devoted to His Father's presence.
Therefore, let us not be casual seekers of God, but covenant seekers who dwell continually in His secret place.
