Called to Be With Him Before Being Sent
Called to Be With Him Before Being Sent
“And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him. And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach.” Mark 3:13–14
Before Jesus sent the Twelve to preach, He first called them to be with Him. This order is not accidental. In the Kingdom of God, being always precedes doing. Fellowship comes before function. Intimacy comes before influence.
Salvation is freely given to anyone who comes to Christ as they are. But leadership in His Kingdom is different. While many are called to receive salvation, those who are entrusted with leadership are first shaped in discipleship. Jesus does not appoint leaders from a distance; He forms them in His presence.
The Cost of Spiritual Leadership
Leadership under Christ is costly because it demands surrender. It requires obedience to His teachings and alignment with His will. Before He entrusts you with responsibility, He watches your consistency. Before He sends you publicly, He develops you privately.
No one is born ready to lead in the things of God. Leaders are made—by following, through prayer, through study of Scripture, through seasons of testing, and through prolonged fellowship with Christ. The strength of your ministry will never exceed the depth of your relationship with Him.
A spiritually weak person cannot carry spiritual weight. The mysteries of Christ and the glory He desires to reveal through a life require a strong and mature spirit. That strength is cultivated in secret—through long hours of prayer, meditation on the Word, and patient waiting on the Lord.
Staying Before Sending
Notice again the pattern: “that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth.” Sending is dependent upon staying. The measure of your impact is connected to the measure of your intimacy.
If you rush to be sent without first learning to stay, your foundation will be shallow. Jesus will not send someone who seeks a platform more than presence. He will not release His anointing to someone eager to fulfil personal ambition. His leadership platforms exist for His glory—not for human recognition.
In the Kingdom of Christ, there is no room for self-driven vision. There is only His vision. If you carry ambitions that compete with His will, they must be surrendered. True leadership begins where personal ambition ends.
The Priority of Fellowship
Your daily fellowship with Jesus must become nonnegotiable. When you prioritise time with Him above every other task, you grow in wisdom, strength, and spiritual discernment. His presence becomes evident in your character and in your work.
He watches your patience in prayer. He sees your perseverance in study. He observes whether you seek Him for who He is—or merely for what He can give. Only those who remain faithful in private are entrusted with public responsibility.
When you stay consistently with Him, He sharpens your spirit, strengthens your heart, and prepares you for fruitful service. Then, when the time is right, He sends you—not to advance yourself, but to advance His Kingdom.
Reflection Questions
1. Am I prioritising being with Jesus, or am I more focused on doing for Him?
2. Are there personal ambitions I need to surrender to fully align with His calling?
3. How consistent is my private fellowship compared to my public service?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to value Your presence above every platform. Form my character before You entrust me with responsibility. Strengthen my spirit through consistent fellowship with You. Remove every personal ambition that competes with Your will, and prepare me to serve for Your glory alone. Amen.
