We Must Follow God to Understand His Ways
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” — Epistle to the Romans 11:33
The ways of God are the expression of His righteousness—the paths by which He walks with man and accomplishes His purposes on the earth. If we are ignorant of God’s ways and refuse to walk in them, we cannot expect to enjoy His fellowship or see His hand working on our behalf.
When God saves us, we do not immediately discern all His ways. We cannot fully understand His will, His purposes, or His plans for our lives at the moment He calls us. Understanding unfolds as we begin to walk with Him. It is in following God personally and consistently that His ways are gradually revealed. As we move with Him rather than remain stagnant, His righteousness and His will become clearer to us. Often, we discover that His ways are far different—and far higher—than we initially assumed.
Some divine callings require us simply to follow God faithfully where we are. As we continue in obedience, clarity comes, and we grow into the assignment He has for us. However, other callings demand more than continuing where we are—they require departure. In such cases, God may ask us to leave a place, a position, or even a familiar environment before we can fully comprehend and carry out the work He is entrusting to us.
When God calls us to greater works, especially works beyond our present scope, we must be careful not to interpret the new assignment through the limitations of our current position. If we refuse to leave when God instructs us to do so, we may misunderstand the nature and magnitude of what He is calling us into.
There are relationships we may need to release so that God can connect us with people who will strengthen and support His purpose for our lives. The call of God carries demands. It often requires sacrifice—of comfort, familiarity, and sometimes even cherished associations—so that we may be wholly devoted to His will.
Nothing should compete with our obedience to God’s kingdom purpose. The souls of men are precious to Him and should be precious to us. When He calls us to labour for their salvation, nothing should be held so tightly that we cannot surrender it for the sake of His mandate.
As we follow the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit reveals habits, attachments, and associations that must no longer remain in our lives. Gradually, our lives become consecrated to God. They are refined, streamlined, and aligned to please Him alone. Our focus sharpens. Our discipline deepens. Our devotion becomes wholehearted.
To follow God is to discover His ways. And to discover His ways is to walk in righteousness, clarity, and purpose—fully yielded to His will.
