Restoration to the Original Identity

Restoration to the Original Identity

“Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.” — Genesis 17:5

Abraham, whom God made the father of many nations, had been answering to the name Abram—which means “exalted father”—yet for many years there were no visible fruits or impact to match that title. What happened? What caused this seeming contradiction?

The root cause was ignorance of divine identity.

For years, Abraham lived without the full revelation of who God had ordained him to be. He bore a name that did not yet reflect the fullness of God’s covenant purpose for his life. But when God changed his name to Abraham—“father of many nations”—He was not merely altering a title; He was unveiling destiny.

When Adam sinned, all humanity fell in him. Sin distorted, redefined, and corrupted our original identity and purpose in God. Humanity began to live beneath its true design, fulfilling purposes contrary to God’s intention. But thanks be to God—through the obedience of Christ—we have been made righteous. Christ did not only die for our sins; He restored us to our original design in God, a creation filled with His glory.

Our new creation in Christ is, in essence, the restoration of our original identity as intended by God. Though this identity was hidden from us, it was never hidden from Him. Now, through Christ, we are invited to rediscover who we truly are.

However, restoration begins with revelation. Unless we know our identity in Christ, we may continue living under a false identity and pursuing a misplaced purpose. The journey of restoration starts with understanding who we are in Christ—our strength, our potential, and our calling—as revealed in Scripture. Our identity is not defined by our background, our parents, or our place of birth, but by God through His Word.

Practical restoration is progressive. It begins at salvation and continues through the unveiling of God’s Word by the Spirit. Only through Christ, revealed in the Scriptures, can we truly know who we are.

As we discover our identity in Christ, we must actively walk it out through faith—through prayer, intentional confession of God’s Word, and obedience to His instructions. Restoration is not passive; it requires participation.

Part of this journey includes spiritual warfare. The enemy resists the manifestation of our true identity because it carries the glory and power of God. Our restored identity threatens his agenda. Therefore, he seeks to cause doubt, discouragement, and confusion.

Even when circumstances contradict what God has spoken about us, we must hold firmly to His Word. Our present challenges are not the final truth concerning us. God’s Word is the ultimate truth. It is through unwavering faith—not doubt—that we become all that God has declared us to be.

Our restoration is secured in Christ, but its manifestation unfolds as we believe, confess, and walk in the truth of who we are in Him.
