1 Samuel 15: 11: "It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments." And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.
God expresses sorrow over Saul's disloyalty to His commandments after He had chosen him to be the king over His people. Saul turned away from following God and failed to carry out His instructions. Some leaders, like Saul, have turned away from following God's guidance after being given authority and opportunities by God. They have begun using their leadership positions and God-given gifts to serve their interests and fulfil their ambitions. God instructed Saul to destroy the entire Amalekite nation, but Saul and his men spared Agag's life and kept the best of the livestock for themselves, disobeying God's command. Whereas God requires wholehearted obedience and not partial compliance.
Many wrongdoings in the church are the result of disloyalty and lack of commitment among some of God's leaders. God deeply regrets and desires to replace leaders who are disloyal to Him. When confronted, Saul made excuses for his disobedience, claiming that the livestock was spared to sacrifice to the LORD. However, what pleases God most is obedience to His instructions. A leader should wholeheartedly follow God's instructions and carry out His commandments. God is pleased when His leaders do as He asks, and He will provide further opportunities for them to serve and make a positive impact in His kingdom.
God has a limit to His patience with unrepentant leaders, as their continued disobedience negatively affects the growth and health of His church. God will not allow them to continue to corrupt His people but will replace them with individuals after His own heart. God does not show favouritism; He accepts only those who fear Him and do what is right. He honours leaders who honour Him and rejects those who dishonour Him.
