How God chooses a successor for His leaders
The passage of Joshua 1:1-2 teaches us a vital lesson about how God chooses a successor for His leaders. When leaders are rounding off their ministry, God calls upon someone who is already an assistant to the leader and who understands the scope, vision, direction, and operations of the ministry. This successor should be someone who is committed to the work of the ministry and has been working alongside the leader faithfully. Anything less than this level of commitment would be unacceptable to God.
When God called upon Joshua to go over the Jordan, he was already aware of the vision and focus of the ministry that Moses had set out to pursue. Joshua knew that going over the Jordan was part of their ministry's focus, so he didn't need to ask God where the location of the Jordan was. This highlights the importance of following a leader faithfully and being obedient to their instructions. We must obey our leaders as if we are serving God because that is exactly what we are doing.
Moses, like any other leader, is only privileged to lead the people of God to their destinies. God has called His leaders and the people given to them to fulfill the vision He has given to them. Everyone that God brings under the leadership of a church or a ministry should see themselves as a family of God and also see the vision given to their leader as a family vision. God is the Father of all that He has brought under that ministry and will reward the loyalty of everyone. We must trust our leaders, and any lack of trust will only bring dishonesty and disloyalty.
Our principal assignment here on earth is to work with our leaders to advance the kingdom of God by bringing people to Christ and disciplining them. We must be industrious in our efforts to advance God's kingdom on earth, and we must not allow anything to hinder our progress. While our ultimate dream is to be raptured and go to heaven, we must focus on our work here on earth and do everything in our power to advance God's kingdom.
